What is #UniteForParkinsons?

#UniteForParkinsons is a global Parkinson’s campaign – launched on 11 April 2017 by the EPDA and Parkinson’s UK. The campaign aims to raise unprecedented awareness of Parkinson’s around the world and to grow an active global Parkinson’s community.

In 2017, our aim was to engage the international Parkinson’s community in sharing a simple social media hashtag (#UniteForParkinsons). We wanted to prove there was an appetite to work together on a common cause, and when 9,000 people from 89 countries used the #UniteForParkinsons hashtag on 11 April 2017, we knew we had created something significant, and that there was potential to develop it into something bigger.

In 2018, we wanted to build on the 2017 foundations and create a bigger and better campaign. So, the EPDA and Parkinson's UK teamed up with Parkinson's organisations in Africa, Australia, India and the US, including the Michael J Fox Foundation and the World Parkinson Coalition to broaden the #UniteForParkinsons campaign scope and ambition. This time, we wanted to reach the general public and to turn #UniteForParkinsons into an impactful campaign to show the world what Parkinson’s truly is. We did this by creating an official #UniteForParkinsons promotional film using emotive video footage from people all over the globe. The #UniteForParkinsons film was seen 18,000 times, and we created a staggering 880,000 social media engagements.

The 2019 #UniteForParkinsons campaign

It is with great sadness then that the EPDA and Parkinson’s UK will not be leading another #UniteForParkinsons campaign in 2019. There are a number of important reasons for this, and if you want more information please email

But fear not, we (the EPDA) plan to develop further global #UniteForParkinsons activities in future years! The EPDA had its six-year strategy plan agreed in November 2018, and building on the #UniteForParkinsons campaign’s previous successes forms part of that strategy.

In the meantime, you can still help us keep #UniteForParkinsons alive and well! How? By using the hashtag in your own World Parkinson’s Day activities – now and forever! Many Parkinson’s organisations, individuals and stakeholders are already fully committed to keeping #UniteForParkinsons going – by organising awareness campaigns of their own and using the #UniteForParkinsons hashtag as a key part of their communication strategies.

And as part of our commitment to raising awareness of Parkinson’s, the EPDA has decided to promote two exciting Parkinson’s projects in 2019 that centre around World Parkinson’s Day – projects that we think will be a perfect fit for the #UniteForParkinsons hashtag. INSIGHT into Parkinson’s 2019

Now in its second year, the INSIGHT into Parkinson’s virtual summit is the largest global online event in Parkinson’s. From 11-13 April 2019, this online conference will bring experts, academics, specialists, clinicians and, of course, people living with Parkinson’s and their carers together, with presentations, information and lots more available to all ticket holders from the comfort of their own homes. We are one of the Affiliate Partners of the INSIGHT summit in 2019, and we believe that #UniteForParkinsons is a perfect partner for the event too.

#UNITED for Parkinson’s campaign 

#UNITED for Parkinson’s is a new and exciting awareness campaign, launched as a direct result of the #UniteForParkinsons campaigns in late 2018 by a group of young-onset people with Parkinson’s from across Europe.

The #UNITED campaign aims to build on the #UniteForParkinsons success by uniting committed Parkinson’s supporters from around the world who want to change common misconceptions about Parkinson's and to highlight the problems that come with the misrepresentation of people with Parkinson's. The campaign involves Parkinson's charities, policymakers, researchers and healthcare providers.
